Frequently Asked Questions about Internships

How do I start the process of applying for an internship?
The internship program is a self-selecting process. The first thing you should do is think about what type of internship you would like (for example, event planning, marketing, public relations, etc.) Then, you can go to Mustang Central to help you select an internship opportunity that may interest you. If you do not see one that you like, you are welcome to visit Career HQ. The Co-op Office can help you begin the process of selecting an internship. Additionally, if there is a company or industry that you would like to tap into, you can also explore internship opportunities on your own. Finally, don't forget that the Business Communications Program Coordinator, Chip Rouse in AC 240, also has a database of all the businesses who have asked for Stevenson interns or who have accepted placement. Once you have found an internship opportunity, you will be responsible for contacting the employer directly to arrange for an interview. Career HQ would be happy to help you update/edit your resume or prepare a cover letter.

What must I do to qualify for an internship?
You must have successfully completed the following courses before beginning the internship: IS 124; IS 134; ART 270; ACC 215; MGT 204; MKT 206; and 2 other business courses; ING 253; ENG 254; either ENG 210 or ENG 223; either ENG 303, ENG 304 or ENG 314. Additionally, you must also have completed CM 101; CM 111 and CM 260.

In addition, you must have a 2.0 GPA minimally and you must have attended a prior Poster Presentation session.

What course will I register for in order to do an internship?
You will be registering for CM 350 if you are a junior, and CM 401 if you are a senior.

When do I register for my internship?
You will need to register for your internship one semester prior to the semester in which you are planning to complete your internship (i.e., register in the fall for a spring internship). All paperwork must be completed prior to registering for the internship. Students can register for the internship only after a signed contract is submitted to Chip Rouse.

Can I start my internship earlier than the start of the semester for which I am registered?
Yes.

Can I have varying hours each week as long as they equal 120?
Yes. Keep in mind, though, that depending on what type of internship you select, it may be worth your while to extend your 120 hours over the course of the semester. An example of this would be Event Planning; it would be important to see all of the necessary steops in order to see an event from start to finish. If you are completing a project for your internship, you may be able to complete it over a shorter period of time by working more hours each week.

Do I have to get my internship approved? If yes, by whom?
Prior to registering or completing the paperwork by your internship, you must have it approved by Chip Rouse, Program Coordinator for Business Communications.

Do I need to complete any forms prior to registering for my internship?
Yes. You will need to complete the Program Agreement Form for Internships (also called a contract) before you can register for your internship. Chip Rosue (AC 240) has this contract.

What do I do after I have secured an internship opportunity, completed my paperwork and registered for the course?
Arrange a start date with your internship employer and determine your schedule. The internship requirements to determine a PASS/FAIL grade will be arranged between you and Chip Rouse.
