English Language & Literature

Bachelor of Arts

English majors are usually the first to ask "Why?"  Not content to watch the world go by, English majors get involved.  They often seek controversy and challenge.  They learn to think critically, argue persuasively, and write clearly.

Majoring in English Language and Literature at VJC not only helps you understand your community and your culture but also prepares you for professional schools and a wide variety of careers.  In small classes, you will study literary theory and the traditions of American and British literature.  You will select courses from a wide variety of genres and topics.  You will gain skills in professional writing, creative writing, and journalism. You will learn a foreign language.

At Villa Julie, English majors pick an area of expertise by choosing either the literature or the writing track.  No matter which track you follow, you will expand your liberal arts background and gain the skills that graduate schools require and employers value.

As an English major at VJC, you can:

  • Participate, if qualified, in the College Honors Program
  • Take a semester to study abroad
  • Enhance your education with a minor in another discipline
  • Contribute to The Villager, our student-run newspaper
  • Submit poetry or creative writing to Spectrum, our literary magazine.
  • Meet area writers and scholars at department readings and social events
  • Get involved with Sigma Tau Delta, the English International Honorary Society
  • Explore career opportunities through an internship experience
  • Prepare for graduate or professional schools
