Providing unique learning opportunities and cultural experiences, Villa Julie's Music Program greatly enhances campus life. No major is offered in Music, however a number of musical ensembles and courses are available. Interested students are encouraged to participate in the College's Music Program as an extracurricular activity or for course credit. Auditions are required for participation in the ensembles, but students must have prior background, either singing in a chorus or performing instrumental music. Student musicians can choose from several different ensembles:
Greenspring Valley Orchestra - Directed by Bob Suggs, the Greenspring Valley Orchestra is a string, woodwind and brass instruments ensemble specializing in the performance of concert music and music for special occasions. It has a present membership of approximately 55 players, including not only students and alumni, but also community members.
Jazz Ensemble - Directed by Jared Denhard, the Jazz Ensemble plays an assortment of music in the styles of blues, swing, Latin, bebop, world music and jazz-rock. Emphasis is placed on improvisation, playing published charts, and original compositions and arrangements.
Chorus - Directed by Bob Suggs and Jared Denhard, the Chorus performs the widest possible variety of choral music, including Renaissance madrigals, classical works, show tunes and popular music. Performances are scheduled throughout the year in both formal and informal settings at the school and off-campus.
Musical Theatre - Villa Julie occasionally stages musical productions, featuring a large number of Villa Julie singers and instrumentalists. In Spring, 2000, the 60s rock musical Hair was produced, for which the composer and author were in attendance. In Spring, 2004, the musical Working was staged. Spring, 2007, saw the production of My!
