Visual Communication Design

Bachelor of Science

Computer technology, video, art, and graphic design were once separate academic and professional areas.  Today, these areas of visual communication are integrated, and this integration is the focus of our Visual Communication Design program.

As a VCD major, you will study the many aspects of design, and from the first year, you will gain experience on the computer.  The curriculum aims to refine your sense of design through a combination of courses stressing manual skills and applications of evolving technologies.  This program offers four years of progressive development in art, through cooperation with professionals, artists/designers, and, in the final years, outside firms.

Program Highlights

  • The program is rigorous, rich, and engaging.  You will begin working toward an art-related career from the outset by taking art courses and working on the computer during your first year.
  • The focus on art and design is enhanced by a solid liberal arts foundation.  You will broaden your understanding of the role of art in society by taking classes in wide ranging subjects like British Literature, The Nature of Mathematics, and Sociology.
  • The Artist-in-Residence program brings internationally known designers to VJC.  These accomplished artists lecture at the College and work with our students in three-day workshops.
  • Portfolio reviews allow you to grow your skills.  At the end of your freshman and sophomore years, you will present your work to a panel of art faculty. In your junior year, your junior project will be critiqued by a focus group.  As a senior, your portfolio will be reviewed one-on-one by a professional artist or designer from Baltimore or a surrounding area.
  • Courses are taught by faculty who are fully engaged in the field.  Our faculty members are accomplished designers, painters, printmakers, sculptors, and photographers.

"Within the major, I've focused on Graphic Design, but I can't decide if I prefer working with print or web.  That's what's great about this program--I've been able to gain experience in multiple areas of design, allowing me to explore what interests me most."
