Today's graphic designer must also be an artist who has the ability to merge images and text in thoughtful, creative, and effectual design. In addition to teaching technical skills, the Visual Communication Design program seeks to develop a student's eye for design. The program stresses the importance of creative problem solving, good writing, clear speaking, and effective communication that embraces the aesthetic.

The program focuses on the integration of four media: computers, video, film and graphic design. From their first year, students enrolled in the major gain experience on the computer while continuously working with the elements and principles of the fine arts and design. All subsequent study aims to refine the student's sense of design through a combination of courses stressing manual skills and applications of the evolving technologies.

This program offers four years of progressive development in art through cooperation with computer professionals, artists and designers. In their senior year, students have the opportunity to work with outside clients.

As designers, we are asked to communicate a message visually -- a message which is carried out through out work to our audience.
In each of our solutions, we begin with the unifying solution of a simple grid. How the grid is altered is where the variety is created. By incorporating our own concepts into this basic structure, we find our individual voices and establish a variety of outcomes.
This synthesis of unity in variety is the inspiration for the 2001 Villa Julie College Visual Communication Design Senior Show, Unity in Variety.
